Der Herrgott von Bentheim
This is a 12th century statue made
of Bentheimer sandstone. The is the oldest example of
Christian sculpture in northern Germany. In the 10th and 11th
centuries Christ was typically depicted as the Lord of the world.
This is not an image of the crucifixion, Christ is standing in front
of the cross and is blessing the believers. After the terrible
plagues of 1348, in which half the population of Europe perished,
the images of Christ changed to the martyred Man of Sorrows who
carried the grief of the world. |
