The purpose of these
pages is to closely examine the arguments in the book Believer's
Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ co-edited by Dr.
Thomas Schreiner and Dr. Shawn Wright. This book is an important
one to study as it takes a very in-depth look at the infant baptism
of covenant theology. In this regard Dr. Wellum makes the following
statement: "Ultimately, if Baptists want to argue cogently
against the paedobaptist viewpoint and for a believer's baptism, we
must, in the end, respond to this covenantal argument." (page
98.)
In an
effort to compare the two positions in the light of Scripture, the
arguments found in the book have been listed on the page linked as
"Active Arguments" below. A covenant theology response is also
listed there. Each argument, with a response from the other side,
will be emailed to a contact list of over 1,000 Baptist seminary
professors,
over 1,000 paedobaptist ministers and a growing number of websites
containing material on baptism. The purpose in this is to bring
each item to a broad audience for comments and further discussion.
It is hoped that this will help address areas of disparity between
Baptists and paedobaptists and help further the development of the
theology of baptism. Provided permission is given, input which is
received will be posted at the appropriate page for all to view and
will be included in on-going papers on the pros and cons of infant
baptism vs. believer's baptism. After each item is covered a
determination will be made as to whether the argument still stands
or whether it has been countered. Countered arguments will be shown
grayed out on the page of Active Arguments and will be considered
Inactive Arguments.
The
following table is given as a running tally of how the arguments are
stacking up.
