Dr. Wellum
and
Infant Baptism:
Two Main Points
The book Believer's Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ
is a very well-written book on the topic of comparing believer's
baptism and infant baptism. As one who believes infant baptism
is Scriptural, this book made me think more than any other on the
subject.
I also happen to be a member of a Reformed church and Believer's
Baptism makes it clear that the theology of the Reformed and
Presbyterian churches (covenant theology) must be answered in order
to resolve the rift between Baptists and paedo-baptists (those who
baptize infants). Therefore the book spends considerable
attention on covenant theology in it's efforts to refute it.
The New
Covenant
Perhaps the primary focus of Believer's Baptism is the
position that the new covenant of Jeremiah 31 has replaced the
Abrahamic covenant of the Old Testament. In covenant theology
the Abrahamic covenant is seen as the foundation for the practice of
baptizing infants in New Testament times.
For this reason, one of the main decisions readers of Believer's
Baptism need to make is to determine if the book is correct in
its belief that the new covenant replaced the Abrahamic covenant.

The second aspect of the book that readers should consider is its
claim that baptism is the sign of the new covenant. This
belief fits very well with the Baptist understanding of the New
Testament. However, when pressed, does this really fit with
the Biblical facts? For more on this, please go to:
