Baptism and the Abrahamic Covenant
Q.
Isn't it quite a stretch to say that baptism in the New
Testament is founded on some obscure covenant with Abraham which is
buried in the pages of Genesis?
A.
Any such claims in this regard must be based
upon an understanding of Scripture which can be clearly explained
and solidly defended. The Scriptures are our only standard for faith
and practice. We should not be so surprised to find a new Testament
sacrament based on something in the Old Testament. The Lord's
Supper, the other sacrament in Protestantism, is in a significant
way founded on the Old Testament Passover. From a somewhat different
angle, the Bible contains many combinations of people or concepts in
the Old Testament which are directly related to people who fill
roles or concepts which are more fully revealed in the New
Testament.
