Baptism Signifies Sins Have Been Washed Away, Right?

    Q.        Isn't the clear message of the New Testament that baptism is a picture that one's sins have already been washed away?  As such, it must only be applied when the individual has repented and accepted Christ's forgiveness.

    A.        Baptism, according to how it is described in the New Testament is a picture of the forgiveness of sins.  Whether it can only be applied after forgiveness is a reality in the person's life is debated.  It is possible that baptism also shows that forgiveness is needed.  There is evidence in the Bible for the second case (in this connection see the material on Romans 4 and Genesis 17).
