Tribute to
In 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor, Dad answered his country's call by enlisting in the Navy. He served on board the U.S.S. Oceanus in the Pacific Ocean for the next three years. He witnessed first-hand the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. After the war Dad worked for 39 years for Baker Furniture Company and became a very skilled craftsman. While on board the U.S.S. Oceanus Dad made the game board shown below. At some point he encased it in plywood and mailed it home to his parents. Dad's younger brother, Robert Kraker, provided invaluable knowledge and skill in putting this stand together for Dad's game board.
Pass your cursor over a number of parts of the game board and click on it for more information and photos! (Don't miss the small pin in the center!)
This tribute is for Dad and Mom. They were both wonderful examples of how to live the Christian life. We were very blessed by them. The game board is a tangible heirloom which reflects Dad's skill and craftsmanship. In addition to frequently thinking of them, often when we enjoy a good meal we think of Mom's wonderful abilities as a cook and her hospitality. Our family will long be reminded of them, whether the present contest is backgammon or chess or just enjoying a fine piece of furniture!
