Dr. Preston Sprinkles' Examination of Dr. Brownson's Book
The following is a high level overview of Sprinkle's two articles.
Sprinkle’s 2014 Article
In 2014 Sprinkle published the first article and it is entitled, Romans 1 and Homosexuality: A Critical Review of Brownson’s Bible, Gender, Sexuality.
In his evaluation Brownson Sprinkle states that he believes Brownson’s book will be the go-to book for those who dispute a traditional view of marriage. He commends Brownson for a well researched argument of the revisionist’s position.
That being said, he does disagree with Brownson’s final conclusions. Contrary to Brownson, Sprinkle believes that the ancient world did hold to a form of sexual orientation and that there are a number of instances of loving same-sex relationships. These are two key points at the very center of Brownson’s argument. Sprinkle identifies 10 people who either were in loving same-sex relationships or recorded them. These are all from before or during the time of Paul. One of the most notable of these is the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. The historian Suetonius wrote that Julius Caesar was “every woman’s man and every man’s woman.”
Sprinkle’s 2015 Article
In this article Sprinkle addresses Brownson’s excessive-lust position. He covers five arguments which he believes counter Brownson’s position. One of these is the topic of that which is contrary to nature.
When Dr. Brownson holds that the Early Church took a certain position he cites to Church Fathers were taught that. Sprinkle sites two Church Fathers who held a different view.
